The thing heats up fast, you can close the lid (actually told to by manual when pre-heating), it can stand upright and out of the way when you aren't using it, it can be set up on virtually any table or even surface, and it's really conservative on gas. It accepts portable liquid propane tanks out-of-the-box, and you can also get a variety of adapters, I'm guessing all standard ones cause there's a large reference chart in the manual about connecting different kinds of adapters, for such tanks as the 20lb ones you get for large gas grills. We have used it five times and still haven't run out of the one longer blue LP gas tank (14.1 oz?) i got for $4 from the hardware store, it should also accept the more squat green LP gas cans too. Again it's the little touches i love; the little metal spring to hold the grill plate in place when you fold up and carry the thing, the little tethered matchstick holder just in case the igniter goes bad (which has shown no signs of being bad at all, has lit perfectly with only one press of the igniter every time and the flame is nice and even), and that the legs will hold the grease trap in place during transportation. The ONLY negatives that I've thought of so far is that you have to wait for the grease to solidify, or you have to clean it right away if you want to fold it and move it. I moved it once right after grilling burgers and grease ran out along the back/bottom. I basically just wipe it down right away now, the body of the grill cools off really quick, the grill plate is the only part that will retain heat for any extended time and even that wasn't too bad. Also, there isn't really a lip around the grill plate so you should be careful not to spatula-slide your meats right off the grill, easy not to do, just be warned not to be a heavy handed klutz (other comparable grills may very well have the same issue, i don't know). So far i would buy this grill a hundred times over. I already want another one cause my girlfriend and I split the cost of this one and it primarily lives at her house. I personally see no need for the 3000 model, but I guess size may matter to some. Based on it being virtually the same as this model except bigger, I'd imagine the 3000 to also be a really quality unit. But this before it's quality reputation drives the price up. Overall, I love this grill. I wanted something that i could take to the beach, camping and the park and still use at home. This grill has enough surface to cook 2 normal sized porterhouses. The matching table is really easy to fold up and carry along with this grill. I didn't want a grill that I had to carry with two hands like a box. I don't like the idea of having greasy cooking equipment all over the front of my shirt and pants.
With just 2 minutes of extra prep and this thing is almost perfect to travel. Clean the drip pan after cooking, do a quick wipe down of the grill when cool and underneath the grill. then just fold it up, SECURE HANDLE with a reusable zip tie or velcro strap, fold up the table and boom, you're off. Easily carry the table in one hand and carry this like a brief case. Backpack for the rest of my bbq supplies. On a small trip, I can bring everything I need in one trip. I don't have to worry about making multiple trips or leaving a guard at the bbq/camp site.
At home it stays stowed nicely in the garage. In less than 5 minutes I have a grill set up. When I'm done, it goes back in the garage. No big stainless steel monstrosity sitting in the yard collecting wildlife.
4.5 stars. minus half a point for the worthless latch. But, a $5 strap or reusable zip tie is sooo easy to use it's not much of a problem.
Additional note. This grill can be used with the top down, unlike some portable grills that will melt themselves or burn the crap out of their handles.
